A pair of York Lions women’s hockey players will be wearing a different shade of red and white this summer. York Lions Dana Somerville and Sarah Power will suit up for Team Canada at the Inline Hockey World Championships.
Somerville will be entering her fifth season with the Lions in 2016-17 and will be competing in her fourth Inline Hockey World Championships (IHWC). The versatile forward is a three-time medalist at the event, picking up the gold in 2012 and silver in 2013 and 2014. Somerville has played in 75 games with the Lions over the last four seasons scoring seven goals and adding six assists. She also earned Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) academic all-Canadian honours in 2014-15.
Power will be pulling double duty as she will join her teammate Somerville on the senior women’s team and will also suit up for the junior women’s team at the event. Like Somerville, she’s a veteran of the IHWC having played on the 2014 silver medal winning team. The rookie appeared in seven games for the Lions in 2015-16.
Power has a busy summer ahead in inline hockey, as she was she will also compete on Canada’s entry in the Amateur Athletic Union’s 2016 Junior Olympic Games in Kapolei, Hawaii in July.
The 2016 Senior Women’s IHWC features 17 teams from across the globe and will take place in Asiago, Italy from June 11 to 17.Team Canada will play out of Pool A with Chinese Taipei, Sweden, Switzerland, and defending champion Czech Republic. The junior women’s tournament takes place in Roana, Italy from June 19 to 25.
