Think of Sook-Yin Lee – broadcaster, actor, singer, composer, writer, director – as the crossing guard of Canadian culture, wrote the Toronto Star‘s Vit Wagner in a Feb. 4 portrait of the CBC host. She works the intersection between the mainstream and avant-garde. In a fairly typical week, the former MuchMusic veejay might divide her time between her current gig hosting “Definitely Not The Opera,” CBC Radio One’s Saturday afternoon survey of popular culture, and enacting an opera of her own. That was the case last month at York University, where Lee and harpist Kristen Moss Theriault performed Waking Period, a one-act improvisational opera adapted from an original screenplay by Lee.
