Brainstorm, a special edition of YFile publishing on the first Friday of every month, showcases research and innovation at York University. It offers compelling and accessible, feature-length stories about the world-leading and policy-relevant work of York’s academics and researchers across all disciplines and Faculties, encompassing both pure and applied research.
Launched in January 2017, Brainstorm is produced out of the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation in partnership with Communications & Public Affairs; overseen by Megan Mueller, manager, research communications; and edited by Jenny Pitt-Clark, YFile editor.
The inaugural issue covers new research that links ideals of perfectionism with suicidal thoughts along cultural lines – highly relevant with this month’s mental health theme – and research that critically examines gender inequity in the digital games industry. A candid interview with a York researcher who works with CERN and publishes with Nature reveals how York is becoming a valued global contributor in physics. A retrospective look at the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design is featured as this Faculty draws together highly diverse areas of creative practice around next-generation technology. Innovation York’s director is interviewed to mark the fifth birthday of this successful office.
