Ian Binnie, a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada since 1998, will present this year’s Kitty Lundy Memorial Fund Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7:30pm in the Robert McEwan Auditorium, Room W141, Seymour Schulich Building. Binnie’s lecture is entitled “Have the Judges Pushed the Charter Beyond its Intended Limits?” A question-and-answer period and refreshments will follow.
Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Binnie was a senior partner of McCarthy Tetrault, associate deputy minister of justice for Canada, part-time lecturer on aboriginal rights at York’s Osgoode Hall Law School and a lecturer at the Upper Canada Law Society, Canadian Bar Association, the Advocates’ Society and several other professional associations.
Binnie was appointed a special parliamentary counsel to the Joint Senate and House of Commons Committee examining the Meech Lake Accord in 1990. In addition, he appeared as counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada in many leading constitutional civil and occasional criminal cases, and was advisor to the government of Newfoundland respecting constitution amendments to the Terms of Union.
Author of numerous publications, Binnie was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1992, and is a member of the Middle Temple Inns of Court (England). In April 2003, he was appointed a commissioner of International Commission of Jurists, based in Geneva, Switzerland. He has received a number of honours, including honorary doctor of laws degrees from the Law Society of Upper Canada and McGill University.

About the Kitty Lundy Memorial Fund Lecture
The annual lecture, organized by the Kitty Lundy Memorial Fund and York’s Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies, features outstanding individuals presenting on a variety of topical subjects, as well as a variety of cultural events to the University. It was established in honour of Atkinson sociology Professor Kitty Lundy, who was killed in a car accident approximately 15 years ago. The mandate of the memorial fund is to bring to campus scholarly and cultural presentations, especially on topics of interest to mature students and women.
