Art meets business at annual Schulich exhibit

Visual ArtArt @ Suite 500 is an annual juried art exhibit presented by York University’s Graduate Program in Visual Arts in collaboration with the Schulich School of Business. Featuring work submitted by graduate students and recent graduates of York’s Faculty of Fine Arts, the opening reception for Art @ Suite 500 will take place on Thursday, March 8, from 6pm to 8pm, at the Miles S. Nadal Management Centre at King and Bay Street in Toronto’s Financial District.

“Art @ Suite 500 represents a longtime collaboration between the Schulich School and York University’s Graduate Program in Visual Arts,” said Schulich School of Business Professor James McKellar, a member of the Art @ Suite 500 selection committee. “The result of this collaboration is perhaps the best exhibition of graduate student work from a visual arts program on permanent display.”

Each year, one piece of art is selected by the jury from the previous exhibition and purchased by the Schulich School of Business to display at the Miles S. Nadal Management Centre, the downtown campus of the business school, along with this year’s selection of art. Schulich has developed an expanding permanent collection of work by students in the Faculty of Fine Arts which dates back to the mid-1990s when the Miles S. Nadal Centre first opened.

“The Art @ Suite 500 collection complements the permanent collection of Canadian and international art within the Schulich School,” said McKellar. “Schulich takes great pride in its art collection, both on campus and at the the Nadal Centre, and its support as a patron of students in the Graduate Program in Visual Arts.”

This year, Art @ Suite 500 will include exhibits from the following artists: Marina Black, Matthew Gardiner, Neil Harrison, Phil Irish, Braden Labonté, Rachel Ludlow, Margarita Macdonald, Carly McAskill, Nadia Moss, Rafael Ochoa, Victoria Vitasek and Tobias Williams.

Exhibitors were chosen by jury selection committee members Michel Daigneault, associate professor and director of the Graduate Program in Visual Arts at York; Judy Schulich, founder of Blueprint: DNA and a member of the advisory committee for the Art Gallery of York University; James McKellar, director of the Real Estate and Infrastructure Program at Schulich; and Alan Middleton, a professor of marketing at Schulich.

Between 10,000 and 12,000 mid- to senior-level managers visit the Miles S. Nadal Centre for executive programs annually, as well as MBA students taking evening and weekend courses, so the exhibition receives excellent exposure to a broad community, said McKellar.

“Members of the York University community are welcome to attend the opening of this year’s exhibition or drop in at any time, weekdays, to view the collection,” he said. The exhibition can be viewed by appointment by calling 416-360-8850.

The Miles S. Nadal Mangement Centre is located on the fifth floor of the Ernst & Young Tower, Toronto Dominion Centre, 222 Bay St., Toronto.

The purchase prize winner will be announced at the reception.
