York University’s Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion (REI) will host a special event on Wednesday, March 21 to mark 2018’s International Day for the Elimination of Discrimination, and focus on the theme of “Sustaining Anti-Discrimination in the Era of Backlash”.
The event brings together multi-sector panelists to discuss Canada’s ongoing efforts to address racial discrimination in an environment complicated by rising populism and intolerance, and aligns with the United Nations 2018 international theme of “Promoting tolerance, inclusion, unity and respect for diversity in the context of combating racial discrimination.”
Taking place from 11am to 1pm, the moderated session features four panelists with diverse professional and personal expertise engaging in a roundtable discussion. The format of the event will encourage participants to engage with Canadians approaching the nuanced, necessary conversation of sustainable anti-discrimination in an age where polarized opinions are the norm.
This event is free of charge and is open to all who are interested in participating in this important conversation.
Registration for the event can be done online.
The panelists include:
- Sunil Gurmukh, counsel, Ontario Human Rights Commission
- Arleen Huggins, partner, Koskie Minsky LLP
- Chizoba Imoka, PhD candidate, Ontario Institute of Studies in Education, University of Toronto
- Sam Tecle, PhD candidate, Sociology, York University
Moderating the event will be Denise Balkissoon, journalist with the Globe & Mail.
The event will be held in the Moot Court Room, Osgoode Hall Law School, 1005 Ignat Kaneff Building.
The Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion is pleased to present this dynamic discussion in partnership with the York University Community Safety Department
