Lions’ taking a ‘humble’ approach to hockey championship

The Toronto Sun reported March 24 that the York Lions are taking a humble approach to Fredericton as they limp into the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s hockey championship tournament. Injuries have plagued the Lions all season and the Ontario champions enter the event without key forward Jason Pinizzotto. “Alberta (26-0-2) has to be the favourite this year, but we can’t look past our own pool,” said Graham Wise, York coach, Sports & Recreation, School of Kinesiology & Health Science.

Groups’ privileges suspended

The Jewish Tribune, March 25, and the Canadian Jewish News, March 22, both reported on the York University administration’s decision to suspend the club privileges of the Jewish student group Hillel and pro-Palestinian student group Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights last week following a public clash between the two groups. York Media Relations Director Nancy White said both Hillel and SPHR would be reprimanded for violating University regulations stipulating that all protests must take place outside University buildings. York Chief Communications Officer Richard Fisher told the CJN that it would have been a lot simpler had Hillel stayed outside Vari Hall. “By coming inside, it created a situation that was much more difficult to manage,” Fisher said. “Both groups abandoned their commitment to the University.”

In the same story, the CJN quoted remarks at a Jewish unity rally later in the week by Martin Lockshin, director of York’s Centre for Jewish Studies. He told students gathered at Founders College that anti-Semitism is not caused by Jews and must be fought by everyone, not just Jews. “Anti-Semitism is a vile illness, a scourge that affects gentile society,” he said. “While we Jews are the targets of anti-Semitism, it is the non-Jews who are affected by the illness. It is the non-Jews of conscience who must lead the fight against the illness that affects non-Jewish society.”

The one-week ban was also was widely reported on March 23 by broadcast media, including CBC radio stations across the country, Canada Now (CBLT-TV), Citypulse Tonight (CITY-TV), OMNI News (OMNI.2) and Morning (CPAC-TV, Ottawa).
