Team Glendon wins second place at National Public Administration Student Case Competition

York University students on the case team representing Glendon’s Master’s in Public & International Affairs (MPIA) program earned second place at this year’s National Public Administration Student Case Competition in Ottawa on Feb. 23.

The competition is jointly sponsored by the Canadian Association of Programs in Public Administration (CAPPA) and the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC), and is designed to highlight the excellence of Canadian public administration programs and students and provide students with a valuable learning experience.

The Glendon MPIA team included graduate students Mona Awwad, Andrea Garland, Monica Smith and Kyler Woodmass, and was coached by Professor Francis Garon and BMO Visiting Fellow Andrew Mackay, both affiliated with the MPIA program.

Teams are presented with a real-world public administration case, and they work together to develop the best solution over the course of a day. Teams then deliver their presentations before a panel of judges.

“This case competition is highly competitive year in and year out,” said Professor Ian Roberge, co-interim principal, Glendon Campus. “The cases are consistently challenging and the other teams are always well coached and well prepared. Congratulations to the Glendon MPIA team for an outstanding performance.”

First place was awarded to Simon Fraser University, with the University of Toronto rounding out the top three in third place.

This year’s host was Carleton University’s School of Public Policy & Administration. The 2019 competing teams originated from 12 Canadian universities: the University of British Columbia, Carleton University, Concordia University, Dalhousie University, the Glendon Campus of York University, Université Laval, Queen’s University, Ryerson University, Simon Fraser University, the University of Toronto, Johnson Shoyama (University of Regina/University of Saskatchewan) and York University.
