Call for proposals: Fostering Inclusive Leadership conference for York students

The Peer Leader Community of Practice (PLCoP) is gearing up to host its 10th annual Peer Leader Conference (PLC) on Wednesday, April 24. The conference is hosted in collaboration with several offices, departments and Faculties across campus. The event aims to develop leadership capacity for any student holding a paid or volunteer position (including work-study or York Engaged Students positions) at York. This year’s theme is Fostering Inclusive Leadership.

Submissions are now being sought from community members interested in presenting at the Peer Leader Conference 2019: Fostering Inclusive Leadership. To learn more, visit peerleadership.yorku.ca/call-for-proposals. The deadline to submit a proposal is Friday, March 29.

The PLC participants will:

  • gain insight into how equity intersects with inclusive leadership;
  • apply the knowledge gained at the conference to their respective roles on campus; and
  • recognize and share a sense of purpose in the York community.

The sessions are offered in conference format, allowing participants the opportunity to select the topics that best align with their interests and learning objectives. In addition, the sessions will be organized in three different streams: core sessions recommended for the first-time student leaders; advanced sessions recommended for returning student leaders; and specialized sessions recommended for student government. The day will be capped off with a leadership panel where participants will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with leaders in the community.

The keynote presentation will be delivered by Joseph Smith, current PhD candidate at York University, educator with the Toronto District School Board and co-creator of a non-profit outreach organization offering a program for young adults in the Jane and Finch community, called “Generation Chosen.” The program is devoted to enhancing the emotional intelligence of young adults from marginalized communities and was recently featured on CBC News.

How to register: PLC is open to positional student leaders, staff and volunteers. Registration is done through the program’s supervisor/co-ordinator. To register a student-staff to attend PLC, visit peerleadership.yorku.ca/plc-2019.

If you have a peer program but are not part of the PLCoP group or want to learn more about registering your students for the Peer Leader Conference, contact Urshian Khalid at urshkhal@yorku.ca. The cost is $20 per person (paid for by the student-staff’s department).
