York Distinguished University Professor of Politics and York Research Chair in Global Economic Governance and Human Rights, Isabella Bakker, visited the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in the U.K. on March 5 and 6. Bakker was at the school to conduct a review of the research program of the LSE Department of Gender Studies and to deliver a public lecture.
The special guest lecture was the centre piece of her visit. Bakker delivered the lecture on March 5 during an evening event on March 5 at the Wolfson Theatre, in the recently constructed New Academic Building in London. It attracted a large, lively and engaged audience. The topic of Bakker’s talk was “Variegated Social Reproduction: Beyond (Re)privatization.” The theme of the lecture reflected some of the new work that Bakker has been doing for her York Research Chair. It concerns new ways of thinking about the social development of the world economy and its relationship to ecological and political forces both historically and in the contemporary era. Following the lecture there was a lively debate chaired by Naila Kabeer, professor of gender and development studies after which there was a reception and dinner hosted by the LSE in honour of Bakker.
Some of Bakker’s new research will be reflected in a special edition of the prestigious British Journal Capital and Class, co-edited with York’s Distinguished Research Professor of Politics, Stephen Gill. The special edition is titled, “Towards Variegated Social Reproduction: Power, Production and Social Reproduction Revisited,” and it will be published in late 2019 or early 2020.
