Dr. Joel Shalowitz, professor and director of the Health Industry Management program at the Kellogg School of Management, part of Chicago’s Northwestern University, has been awarded a 2003-2004 Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture in the new Health Industry Management (HIM) Program recently established by York’s Schulich School of Business.
Shalowitz has been teaching a course in international health systems in Schulich’s HIM program since January. During his stay in Toronto, he will study the Canadian healthcare system in order to work with Schulich’s HIM program director, Brenda Zimmerman, on the Health Industry Management MBA major. He also will be involved in developing executive education courses for the Schulich Executive Education Centre.

Shalowitz’ areas of professional interest and research include medical group management, managed care systems, quality assessment and international health care systems. In addition, he practices internal medicine and manages a primary care group with offices at five locations in the Chicago suburbs. He is one of approximately 800 US faculty and professionals who will travel to some 140 countries this academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program, established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas.

The program is sponsored by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. In its 56 years of existence, thousands of US faculty and professionals have studied, taught or done research in other countries, and thousands of their counterparts in other countries have engaged in similar activities in the US.
