The York University Foundation, which raises funds in support of York’s goals and ambitions, recently announced the addition of five new members to its board of directors. The new members are Barry Gales, Aidan P. Flately, Karim Lakhani, Maxwell Gotlieb and Sean O’Sullivan. Here’s who they are:
Barry Gales, BA, MBA, is a principal in the investment and merchant banking company, the Midland Group of Companies Inc. Gales is also a principal of the D.H. Gales Family Charitable Foundation of Toronto, which provides support to the community. Gales is a generous donor to York University’s Faculty of Fine Arts.
Aidan P. Flatley, BA Econ. ’78, a York alumnus, is president and CEO of Kenaidan Contracting Ltd., a general contracting company with offices in Canada, the US and Ireland. Flatley and Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. have generously supported student awards through York University’s Faculty of Graduate Studies and the School of Kinesiology and Health Science.
Karim Lakhani, BSc, is president and general manager of Shawneeki Golf Club in Sharon, Ontario, a director of Lakhani Holdings Ltd., and on the Board of Governors of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. Lakhani and his family have generously established the Noor Fellowship in Islamic Studies through York University’s Faculty of Arts, and are also founders of the Noor Cultural Centre in Toronto, which values diversity and fosters new learning.
Maxwell Gotlieb, BA ’72, LLB ’75, LLM ’97, a York alumnus and former adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, is a senior partner at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, a major Toronto law firm. Gotlieb has generously supported student awards through York University’s Centre for Jewish Studies to benefit the Faculties of Education and Graduate Studies. Gotlieb is a well-known speaker and writer for professional and industry bodies, and sits on the boards of numerous public, private and charitable organizations.
Sean O’Sullivan, chief operating officer at HSBC Bank Canada, was most recently an executive vice president at HSBC USA Inc. in New York City. HSBC Bank Canada has generously supported student awards at York University through the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Schulich School of Business.
