Toronto Mayor John Tory to headline McLaughlin College’s First-Year Student Forum

McLaughlin College’s Annual First-Year Student Dinner has been transformed into an online Student Forum due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The forum will be presented virtually on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom.

This year’s featured keynote speaker is Mayor John Tory, who has been responsible for leading Canada’s largest city – and the undisputed financial, cultural, and entertainment hub of the country – since his election in 2014.

As a graduate of York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School and a strong supporter of the University, Mayor Tory understands the importance of quality higher education in advancing a person’s life and career. He also appreciates how demanding it is for students to do well in their university studies, especially during a raging pandemic.

The first year of university is challenging for all students who must adjust and adapt to the rigors and demands of university life. McLaughlin College holds its Annual First-Year Student Forum to reassure its affiliated students that the difficulty they are experiencing in their ‘transition year’ is typical for most direct-entry high school students.

“It is widely accepted that first year is the most difficult year of university. We want our first-year students to know that they are appreciated fully by all of us at McLaughlin College, and that we will assist them in any way we can to help them to succeed,” says McLaughlin College Head and Associate Professor James C. Simeon, who will host the forum.

Mayor John Tory’s inspirational address will remind students that they must strive to do their best, and that through sustained effort they will succeed not only in their first year of studies, but right through to graduation. But, equally as important, Mayor Tory wants to hear from the students themselves and will be answering questions after his keynote.

“We anticipate a highly fruitful exchange between Mayor Tory and the students in attendance,” says Simeon. “This will provide our students with an opportunity to speak directly with the Mayor of the largest city in Canada.”
