For the second straight year, former York University hockey player Jim Hulton has been named an assistant coach of Canada’s National Junior Team. (See the June 4, 2003 YFile.) The team will compete in the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship (Dec. 25, 2004, to Jan. 4, 2005), in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Team Canada is set to open the tournament on Dec. 25 against Slovakia.
Hulton (BA Hons. ’93) was a left winger with York’s men’s hockey team from 1989 to 1993 and was team captain in his final season. In four seasons with York he tallied 13 goals and 30 assists.
In addition, as the head coach, Hulton led Canada’s National Under-18 Team to a gold medal at the 2002 Eight Nations Cup. He was an assistant coach with Canada’s National Under-18 Summer Team which won the 2001 Six Nations Under-18 Tournament in the Czech Republic.

A native of Wolfe Island, Ont., Hulton coached the Belleville Bulls for three years prior to joining the Kingston Frontenacs. This included earning the Ontario Hockey League Eastern Conference regular season championship in 2001-2002.
Canada has won the World Junior Championship 10 times in the history of the championship, including seven of the last 15 gold medals. Team Canada won an unprecedented five straight World Junior titles from 1993 to 1997. Canada also took home silver medals in 2004 in Finland, in 2003 in Halifax, NS, in 2002 in the Czech Republic and in 1999 in Winnipeg, MB, as well as bronze medals in 2001 in Russia and in 2000 in Sweden.
