The Borealis Council at the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies is inviting applications from York University upper undergraduate and graduate students involved in northern fieldwork.
Each year, up to 10 spots in an Emergency First Aid and the Wilderness First Aid course will be awarded to students requiring mandatory first aid training prior to conducting fieldwork in the north. The course will be held on May 14 and 15 in the Skyroom, A300, York Hall, Glendon Campus.
Eligible students are full-time graduate or upper-level undergraduate students at York. Preference will be given to graduate students of Borealis Council faculty members.
The Borealis Council provides leadership on scholarly Northern research and educational activities occurring within/at York University. The council focuses on “northern” regions, particularly those in the Canadian Arctic and Subarctic; to foster and facilitate northern scholarship and research through mentoring and supporting external research grant applications.
In order to apply, students must submit the following to robarts@yorku.ca:
- Summary of their research project and need (150 words max).
- Details of planned fieldwork (dates, location, a summary of fieldwork activities
(100 words max) and whether Wilderness First Aid is mandatory. - Benefits of a Wilderness First Aid course for their research (100 words max).
- Support statement from the supervisor.
The application deadline is April 19.
Selection will be made within 30 days based on the following criteria: research training needs, remoteness of fieldwork, amount of time spent in the field, and financial needs.
