The document outlines emerging themes arising out of the community-driven review of security services at York University.
In February 2022, York announced that it was undertaking a community-driven review of its security services with an aim to develop an alternative security services model for the University.
A team made up of York students, faculty, staff and an external consultant, all with diverse expertise and lived experiences, is leading the security services review.
The review is a commitment and action identified in York University’s Action Plan on Black Inclusion, a document developed following a pan-University consultation process with members of the Black and racialized communities.
Following extensive engagement and consultation with the community, the review team has prepared a document that highlights some of the emerging themes to date and summarizes topics and solutions that were identified during the consultations. The community consultations, which began in February, will continue until the early fall. Initiatives included written submissions, a dedicated session with York’s Community Safety Council, an online education session that was attended by York community members as well as other post-secondary institutions, two community online town halls, meetings and group discussions with York students, faculty, and staff.
The themes identified in the document are preliminary only and require further analysis prior to the creation of the final recommendations report, which is planned for release in early 2023. The solutions presented in the document are driven by the community and are anchored in best practice research and jurisdictional analysis. Accordingly, feedback will be received on these themes and topics, and an updated emerging themes document will be available to the community in early fall. Feedback on the updated document will be solicited and the input received will help to inform the final report.
