Remembrance Day ceremonies planned across all York campuses

Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend York University’s Remembrance Day ceremonies on the Keele, Glendon and Markham campuses on Nov. 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The Keele Campus ceremony will take place at the flagpole located in the Harry W. Arthurs Common. The Glendon Campus ceremony will be held at the flagpole located in the West Quad (York Hall). The Markham ceremony will be held at the East Green flagpole.

This year, the event will be in-person only.

Wearing a poppy is a Canadian tradition for Remembrance Day. Donation boxes for poppies are situated across the Keele Campus at these locations: Vari Hall, Red Zone, Scott Library, Bookstore, Steacie IT Service Desk and Schulich Executive Learning Centre front desk. They will also be available at both ceremonies.

In addition, Legion 527 is accepting donations to their poppy campaign via Interac e-transfer at legion527deposit@gmail.com (add “Poppy” to the comment field on the Interac e-transfer).

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the signing of the armistice – on Nov. 11, 1918 – that ended the First World War. At 11 a.m. on that day, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. Remembrance Day honours the men and women who were killed during the two world wars and other conflicts. Previously known as Armistice Day, it was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War.
