Dear colleagues,

I write to inform the community that Dan Palermo will assume the role of deputy provost, Markham, effective Jan. 1, 2025.

Dan Palermo

Professor Palermo has served as interim deputy provost, Markham, since July 2023, and will continue to head York’s newest campus into 2028. Under his leadership, the Markham Campus welcomed its first cohort of students in September 2024 and opened its doors to community members at its grand opening in November 2024.

As deputy provost, Professor Palermo has responsibility for all aspects of the ongoing administration and success of the Markham Campus, representing it in both academic and administrative matters inside and outside the University and serving as a member of York University’s senior administrative team.

Professor Palermo previously served as vice-dean at the Lassonde School of Engineering, where he is a professor of structural engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering. Prior to joining York in 2013, he taught at the University of Calgary and the University of Ottawa.

I am very pleased that Professor Palermo will continue his stewardship of the Markham Campus as it becomes a fully operational unit of York University and am grateful for his tremendous contributions thus far.

David H. Peters
Interim Provost & Vice-President Academic
