Norman Yan, professor of biology with York’s Faculty of Science & Engineering, has been awarded two grants for staff to assist with research into the health of Ontario’s lakes at York’s FLAMES lab in Dorset, Ont. The grants include a $27,500 FedNor (Federal Economic Development for Northern Ontario) Youth Internship from Industry Canada and a $14,100 Métis Training Strategy grant.

FedNor is an initiative of the Government of Canada aiming to address the economic development needs of Northern Ontario. The Youth Internship Program provides Northern Ontario postsecondary graduates with valuable full-time work experience in business and economic development with the objective of leading to longer term employment in Northern Ontario. A successful candidate for the FedNor position has been selected and will start her training with Yan in Jan. 2005.
The Métis Training Strategy (MTS) is a program of the Métis Nation of Ontario aimed at developing the capacity of the Métis community in Ontario to develop and deliver quality training programs that will contribute to planning and strategies for training. MTS is also designed to encourage communities to take responsibility for their own employment and training related needs by building on the capacities and strengths of organizations and relationships that currently exist.
