The Brampton Guardian carried a feature story Dec. 17 on York alumnus Edward Bansah (BA ’03) who achieved a “life-long dream” by founding Peel Region’s Youth APEEL (Providing Education Employment and Leadership), an organization that provides programs for young people who need job experience and employment. Bansah said creating an organization like this was a goal he had when he was a student at York University.
Stadium deal touted as model for Halifax’s CFL hopes
York’s future sports stadium received a mention in the Dec. 16 edition of the Toronto Star in a story about plans for a Canadian Football League franchise in Halifax. Reporter Rick Matsumoto suggested a deal similar to the one between the Toronto Argonauts, York and the federal and provincial governments would be needed to make the long-discussed plans for an East Coast team a reality.
Alumnus appointed Amex VP
American Express announced the appointment of York alumnus Shawn Klerer (MBA ’81, BA ’79) as vice-president and general manager of its Canadian business travel operations in the Dec. 16 editions of The Globe and Mail and National Post. A graduate of York’s Faculty of Arts and Schulich School of Business, Klerer joined American Express in 1989 and has been promoted many times within the finance organization.

- Edward Spence, York’s senior policy advisor, discussed the University’s position on an interim bus rapid transit route to the Keele campus from Downsview subway station on CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning” in Toronto Dec. 17. Spence said that any busway should be interim only and linked to a guarantee that the subway to York will proceed. Coverage of the Toronto Transit Commission’s plans for the route were carried on several radio broadcasts in Toronto Dec. 16, including an interview with TTC Chair Howard Moscoe on “Metro Morning” and news items on CFRB-AM and 680 News (CFTR-AM). CFTO-TV News also covered the story, quoting Moscoe as saying an expansion of the Spadina subway line to York was in the works.
