Shirley Hoy, chief administrative officer of the City of Toronto, is visiting York University today to give a guest lecture to students in public administration. She will speak on “Managing Toronto: Unique in Ontario, Unique in Canada” to students in Political Science 3190: Public Administration. Her talk will be held in 341 Bethune College from 11:30 to 12:40am.
Hoy is responsible for the delivery of more than 40 major services to a population of 2.5 million people in the fifth largest city in North America. These services include parks and recreation, waste management, supplying safe drinking water, fire service, road maintenance and ambulance services. On April 15, Hoy will assume the newly created position of Toronto city manager.

Prof. Thomas Klassen, who teaches the public administration course and is coordinator of the Public Policy & Administration Program in York’s Department of Political Science, is delighted by Hoy’s willingness to speak to York students. “She is a wonderful role model for students planning a career in government,” Klassen said. “Students are fortunate to learn about the challenges of municipal management from one of Canada’s foremost public servants.”
