Lions volleyballers host playoff games

The York men’s volleyball team, 10th ranked in the country, will host an Ontario Uuniversity Athletics (OUA) semifinal match on Sunday at 1pm at the Tait McKenzie Centre. York will face the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal game between Ryerson Rams (14-6) and Toronto Varsity Blues (13-7).

The Lions, who finished first in the OUA with a record of 18-2, wrapped up the regular season with wins over McMaster Marauders and Guelph Gryphons last week. Ryan Anderson recorded a team-high 17 kills, while adding eight digs in Thursday’s 3-1 victory over McMaster. In Saturday’s 3-2 win against Guelph, Anderson recorded 10 kills and led York in points for the fifth consecutive match.

The Lions, who finished first in the OUA East Division with a record of 15-4, dropped a 3-2 decision to the Rams last Friday. York suffered a huge loss in the defeat to Ryerson as fifth-year setter and two-time OUA all-star Dana Haan injured her knee and will be out for the remainder of the season.

The women’s basketball team also begins the post-season this week with an OUA East quarterfinal game at Queen’s on Wednesday. The Lions finished fifth in the OUA East with a 10-12 record, while the Queen’s Golden Gaels were fourth with a record of 13-9. Queen’s won both regular season meetings between the teams (51-48, 58-46).

The York men’s basketball team finished in second place in the OUA East Division, gaining a coveted first-round bye and home court advantage for the division semifinal, which is scheduled for Feb. 26 at the Tait McKenzie Centre (8pm).

The Lions track and field teams recorded eight personal best and eight OUA qualifying performances at the Windsor Team Challenge last weekend. York competes at the Hal Brown last chance meet at Toronto this weekend before competing at the OUA Championships on Feb. 26-27 at Windsor.

The men’s hockey team (10-6-5-1) picked up three of a possible four points in a two-game weekend series against Windsor. The Lions have a two point lead on Laurier (11-9-2-0) for top spot in the OUA Mid-West Division. York will play its final two regular season games this week at Guelph (7-10-4-1) on Thursday and at home against Laurier on Saturday at 2pm at the Ice Gardens.
