March 8-March 21 Coalition organizes yoga sessions

York’s March 8-March 21 Coalition will hold two yoga sessions in recognition of International Women’s Day and International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, sponsored by York’s Centre for Wellness Research and Education and the Retirement Planning Centre at York.

Yoga instructor Karen Gray, coordinator with York’s Retirement Planning Centre, will lead classes on Thursday, March 10, noon-12:50pm and 1-1:50pm, in room 113 Vanier College. Gray’s class is suitable for beginners and those with some previous yoga knowledge. Gray focuses on breathing, stretching and stress reduction. Based on hatha yoga, Gray calls her style of yoga “restorative yoga”.

Hatha yoga instructor Alex Bovkis will hold two sessions on Tuesday, March 15 at noon-12:50pm and 1-1:50pm in room 211 Founders College. Bovkis emphasizes stress reduction, relaxation, limbering of joints, body toning/alignment and mental and spiritual balance. Her training is from The Yoga Studio in Toronto. Bovkis, who is also a reflexologist and transpersonal therapist, believes yoga increases our senses and mental acuity, tones us physically, emotionally and mentally, and brings balance and harmony into all walks of our life. Yoga teaches us to recognize our limitations and then move beyond them.

There is no fee for the sessions; however pre-registration is mandatory. For registration, please email womenyrk@yorku.ca with your full name, contact telephone number and whether you are a faculty member, staff member or student.
