Paul Axelrod has been reappointed dean of York’s Faculty of Education but has announced his intention to stay only one year, July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007, at which time he will return to full-time teaching and research. Axelrod’s reappointment was approved by the executive committee of the York University Board of 
Governors at its meeting on Dec. 5. He will continue the decanal position he began on July 1, 2001.

“I have enjoyed the deanship tremendously,” Axelrod said. “This is a first-rate Faculty with excellent students, exciting research and a rich variety of community-based, graduate and professional development programs. Its profile continues to grow in the educational community. I look forward to a major development in the Faculty over the next year – its move from the Ross Building to Winters College.”
Axelrod is the author and editor of eight books, including Values in Conflict: the University, the Marketplace and the Trials of Liberal Education (2002); The Promise of Schooling: Education in Canada 1800-1914 (1997); Making a Middle Class: Student Life in English Canada during the Thirties (1990); and Scholars and Dollars: Politics, Economics and the Universities of Ontario, 1945-1980 (1982).
Axelrod was educated at York (PhD ’80, BA ’72) and the University of Toronto where he received his MA in 1973. He has been a professor at York since 1982 with primary research interests in the history of schooling and higher education, the political economy of education, educational policy, and adolescence, youth and student life.
