A new champion will be crowned in Ontario University Athletics men’s basketball after the visiting York Lions upset the top-ranked – and three-time defending national champion – Carleton Ravens, 82-74, in the OUA East Final March 4.
With the victory, the Lions snapped a 10-game losing streak versus the Ravens that dates back to Nov. 22, 2002. York’s last victory over Carleton was a 77-75 win in the OUA East Final on March 3, 2002. The Lions, who have won 11 of their last 12 games, advance to the OUA Wilson Cup Championship March 11, where they will host the winner of the OUA West Final between McMaster and Laurier.
The Lions had already earned a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport “Final 10” national championship in Halifax, March 16-19.

The women’s basketball team lost, 58-47, to McMaster in the OUA Championship on Saturday but still have a shot at the national title. The Lions will open the 2006 CIS National Championship on Friday against the UBC Thunderbirds in Fredericton, NB.

The Lions track and field teams will compete at the CIS Championships this weekend in Saskatoon. Medal favourites include sprinter Anthony Garber, who captured gold in the 60 metre dash with a time of 6.83 and also added silver as a member of the York men’s 4×200 metre relay team at the OUA Championship.
Marlon Nangle is the defending national champion in the triple jump. He is ranked number one in the CIS but had to settle for bronze at the OUA Championships after being hampered by an achilles injury.
On the women’s side, Kaitlin Coopman won silver in the 600 metre run with a time of 1:33.89 at the OUA Championships. She is ranked fourth in the CIS.
