York Lions men’s and women’s basketball teams crack the top 10

For the first time this season, the York Lions men’s and women’s basketball teams are both in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Top 10. The No. 5-ranked women’s team moved up one spot from a week ago after posting back-to-back 20 point victories over the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The men’s squad moved into the No. 10 position after defeating No. 5 Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The Lions women’s team leads the Ontario University Athletics East Division. The team boasts an 11-2 regular season record with their only loses coming on the road against No. 1 McMaster Marauders and the No. 8 Brock Badgers. The Lions have won six straight games, outscoring their opponents by an average of 24.5 points per contest. At last year’s CIS Championship, York knocked off McMaster and the No. 1-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies en route to claiming the consolation title.

After falling to the No. 1-ranked Carleton Ravens last week, the men’s basketball team rebounded with a 64-61 victory over the Gee-Gees. Over the winter break, the Lions won the 16th Ed DeArmon Memorial Tournament at Ryerson.

This week, the Lions face a pair of city rivals when they tip off against the Ryerson Rams on Friday and Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday. Friday’s contest against the Rams will be available live via free Webcast at the Ryerson Sports & Recreation Web site. The women’s game begins at 6pm followed by the men at 8pm.
