Senate Synopsis

At its 495th meeting held on Jan. 30, 2003, the Senate of York University:

Elected by acclamation, as recommended by the Senate Executive Committee:

Professor Neil Brooks to a vacancy on the Senate Committee on Academic Policy and Planning;

approved on consent, as recommended by the Senate Committee on Curriculum and Academic Standards:

  • approved, as recommended by the Senate Committee on Curriculum and Academic Standards:
  •  five redefined fields for the Graduate Program in Philosophy to replace the 10 fields currently on offer:
  • Cognitive Science, Philosophy of Mind and Language
  • Continental Philosophy
  • Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, and Philosophy of the Social Sciences
  • History of Philosophy: 20th Century, Modern and Ancient
  • Moral Philosophy, Social and Political Philosophy, and Philosophy of Law;

 

  •  establishment of the Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry Stream, Specialized Honours Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Chemistry, Faculty of Pure & Applied Science;
  • establishment of the Honours (Minor) Programs for the European Studies and the Science and Society Interdisciplinary Programs, Faculty of Arts;
  • the closure of the Atkinson Degree Programs in Creative Arts Studies and Fine Arts (Film, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts), Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies;
  • received a report from Vice-President Embleton including:
  •  status of admission applications for 2003;
  • issues regarding Daniel Pipes’ speaking engagement at York on Jan. 28;
  • the Honorary Doctorates that will be presented at the June 2003 convocation ceremonies;
  • received a report from the Academic Colleague, Professor Dewitt on the Dec. 12 and 13, 2002, meetings of the Academic Colleagues to the Council of Ontario Universities;
  • noted a report for information from the Senate Committee on Curriculum and Academic Standards on minor changes to degree requirements;
  • noted a report for information from the Senate Committee on Admissions, Recruitment and Student Assistance on approval of new awards and changes to existing awards;
  • noted a report for information from the Senate Academic Policy & Planning Committee on the Annual Academic Planning Forum which will be held at 3pm on Thursday, Feb. 27, as part of a special open meeting of Senate;
  • deferred a discussion of the Report of the Action Committee of Senate to a future meeting.
