York social sciences and women’s studies Professor Linda Briskin adopts a different role today with the debut of an exhibit of her work at the Goldfarb Centre Gallery, located in the main lobby of the Joan & Martin Goldfarb Centre for Fine Arts.
The exhibit, a collection of photographs taken by Briskin during her numerous trips into the wilderness, is titled, "An Hour From the City". Curated by Jennifer Rudder, executive director and curator of Gallery Stratford, the exhibit, which starts today, will continue until Friday, April 20. There will be a Meet-the-Artist reception at 5pm on Thursday, April 17, in the gallery.
"In the tradition of the Victorian naturalists, Linda Briskin heads out to nature at any opportunity. Her camera is her notebook, with which she records the patterns and rhythms that she observes. Her keen eye seeks out evidence of beauty, colour and texture," says Rudder. "From the orchestral sweep of the ocean to the slender shadow of a crooked reed in the snow, Briskin inhales it all. The images here are her exhalation."
This is Briskin’s first photography show. She is also well-known for her work as a professor in York’s Faculty of Arts. Her other life can be found at www.arts.yorku.ca/sosc/lbriskin.
In 1998, Briskin received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching in York University’s Faculty of Arts and in 1999 she was awarded the prestigious 3M Teaching Fellowship.
