Increasingly, there is a demand for effective emergency management professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to prepare for, prevent, mitigate and respond to crises locally and internationally.
On July 12-13, from 9am-4:30pm, RedR Canada will offer Introduction to Disaster Management, a training course free to York students. The course provides an overview of disaster and emergency management and practice, and tackles issues such as risk management, environmental and climate change, international dimensions of disaster relief, the changing nature and structure of emergency management, and population displacement.
The following well-known experts in the field will lead the course:
- David Etkin, professor and director of York’s new master’s-level program in disaster and emergency management
- George Haddow, research scientist and professor at the Institute for Crisis, Disaster and Risk Management, George Washington University
- Terry Jeggle, senior adviser for the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) secretariat on disaster risk reduction policy and training/education matters
- Peter Penz, professor emeritus of York’s Faculty of Environmental Studies
Students interested in pursuing a career in the areas of disaster management and humanitarian relief are encouraged to register. For the course outline, registration details and course fees, see the RedR Canada Web site.
