York Lions tennis star Joelle Fisher will represent Ontario at the inaugural University & College National Tennis Championships this week (Aug. 16 to 18) at the Rexall Centre.
The Toronto native qualified for the nationals by winning her second OUA individual tournament in a row this past season. Eight women and eight men will compete in the national championships, which will take place during the Rogers Cup professional women’s event at the Rexall Centre. Tennis Canada will Webcast the finals of the university/college event at 3pm, Saturday, Aug. 18.
While Ontario selected its representative in the women’s tournament based on Ontario University Athletics (OUA) play, national championship qualifying tournaments were held in Alberta, New Brunswick, BC and Quebec this summer. York University played host to the men’s Ontario qualifier earlier this year at the Rexall Centre.
An OUA all-star the past two seasons, Fisher led the Lions to their second bronze medal in a row at the provincial championships last season. The Lions compiled a record of 40-21 in 2006-2007.
The Lions open the 2007-2008 OUA season against the visiting University of Toronto Varsity Blues at 3pm, Thursday, Sept. 13.
