The York Lions soccer teams are enjoying another banner week in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rankings.
The men’s team (6-0) rose to number two from number three in the national rankings which were released on Sept. 18. The team’s improved ranking came after sweeping road games against the Guelph Gryphons and Waterloo Warriors last weekend. The women’s team (6-0) remained at number three for the third week in a row following wins over the same two universities.
Both York teams have achieved the best rankings in University history. Both teams also have the top scorer in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) league. York Lions women’s soccer team player Stefania Morra leads the OUA women’s league with eight goals. York Lions men’s soccer team player Moreno Alberti has 10 goals for the men’s team.
The women’s team is coached by master soccer coach Paul James, a former Canadian national team player and under-20 national team coach. This season, James handed over the men’s head coaching duties to Carmine Isacco, who is also the goal tending coach for Toronto FC of Major League Soccer.
The Lions return to action this weekend with home doubleheaders against the McMaster Marauders on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 1 and 3:15pm, and the Brock Badgers on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1 and 3:15pm.
