York Digital Dimensions: The Arts and Virtual Culture Advanced Research Seminar presents Adriene Jenik, a multimedia artist, academic and curator, in a special lecture presentation, titled "Playing, Performing and Imagining the Digital Public Sphere", on Friday, Jan. 18, at 2:30pm in Room 1009, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Bldg., on York’s Keele campus.

In her lecture, Jenik will discuss the evolution of her public media projects (in platforms such as live television, video shorts, and e-zine publishing), which parallel the development of personal computing and the Internet. Jenik’s past projects, which include Mauve Desert, El Naftazeteca and Desktop Theatre, use the collision of high technology and human desire to propose new forms of literature, cinema and performance. Her recent works involve implementing large-scale public art events over community-wide wireless networks.
As an artist and scholar whose work embodies the intersection of theory with praxis, Jenik’s artistic efforts serve as a catalyst for uniting social movement and community with the aesthetic realm. She is currently a professor of computer and media arts in the Visual Arts Department at the University of California, San Diego. Her work has been widely reviewed in The Village Voice, Jumpcut, Cyberstage and Afterimage. Jenik has also been published in High Performance, Felix, The L.A. Weekly and the Utne Reader.
