Networks of Centres of Excellence

(NCE)


The objective of the NCE program is to mobilize Canada's research talent in the academic, private and public sectors and apply it to the task of developing the economy and improving the quality of life of Canadians. The 2000 call for applications is in the following areas: The Automobile of the 21st century; Genomics Technologies and Society; Meeting Environmental Challenges for Clean Water; and Early Child Development and Its Impact on Society. Each network is funded up to a maximum of two seven-year cycles. Since this program involves university commitment, we are asking potential applicants to contact ORA by no later than March 1.

NATO

Science Program: Cooperative Science and Technology


NATO supports projects intended to initiate research cooperation and to establish enduring personal links between scientists of the NATO and Partner countries. The specific support mechanisms available are Collaborative Linkage Grants and Expert Visits, and to organize Advanced Study Institutes and Advanced Research Workshops. Four areas have been designated for support: Physical and Engineering Science and Technology; Life Science and Technology; Environmental and Earth Science and Technology; and Security-Related Civil Science and Technology.

Deadlines vary according to theme. The deadline for "Physical and Engineering Science and Technology" is March 1.


Ontario HIV Treatment Network

Request for Proposals


Up to $1 million/year is available, for up to five years, to support teams of researchers who would work in partnership with community-based AIDS groups and other stakeholders to develop a Community-based HIV Services Evaluation Unit. The program would undertake a series of different research projects, all designed to assess and strengthen the effectiveness of community-based AIDS programs and services in Ontario.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund

Visiting Professorships in the Basic Medical Sciences


Up to $5,000 is available to enable institutions to bring in for a five-day visit a distinguished scientist who will engage in teaching and discussion with students and faculty in the following disciplines: anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, biophysics, cell biology, genetics, neurobiology, nutrition, pharmacology, physiology, and toxicology.

Deadline: March 1

Applications for external sources of funding (i.e., outside York) must be submitted to ORA before forwarding them to the agencies. To assist in meeting these deadlines, it is recommended that applications be submitted to ORA one to two weeks prior to the deadline dates.
