Courses
One of the primary purposes of the Jean Monnet programme is
to foster teaching related to European integration. During the
funding period, Jean Monnet Professor Maas incorporated EU
affairs into existing courses and designed and taught the
following new courses:
PAIA6309 Europe in International Affairs
This MPIA seminar considers the role of Europe in international
affairs, focusing on the evolution of the European Union and
its institutions from the end of the Second World War to the
present. We cover theories of regional integration
(neofunctionalism, intergovernmentalism, multi-level
governance, and others) as they apply to Europe, study the
institutions (focusing on the European Union and its agencies),
and analyze the politics of European governance. Aimed at
students in the Master's Program in Public & International
Affairs.
POLS4315 New Forms of Governance in Europe
Europe has changed fundamentally, perhaps almost beyond the
recognition of those emerging from the Second World War. Not
only is war between European states today almost inconceivable,
but evolving institutions and practices tie Europeans ever
closer together. Undergraduate lecture course.
POLS6655 Theories and Institutions of European
Integration
This advanced seminar considers the history, politics, and
theories of European law and integration, from the end of the
Second World War to the present, focusing on the European Union
and its institutions.
As Jean Monnet Chair, professor Maas also advised many
theses and dissertations.
