York University hires Coach Ray
York University Lions track and field head coach Colin Inglis announced on Wednesday (Jan. 6) that Raymond Rudder has been hired as the full-time assistant coach for the program for 2016.

Rudder will serve in the role for the next year in place of Colleen Dotson, who is on maternity leave.

Rudder is already familiar with the team as he joined the Lions coaching staff in 2015 as an assistant coach to work with the multi-event athletes. He came to York with a wealth of experience working with professional sports teams and Olympic, world and collegiate athletes, as well as implementing youth development programs to successful elite junior athletes.

As the chief coach and manager of Athletics Barbados, he oversaw a number of tremendous performances by the country's track and field athletes, including Shakera Reece winning bronze in the women's 100m at the 2011 Pan Am Games, Akeila Jones claiming gold in the women's long jump at the 2014 world junior championships and Kion Joseph capturing bronze in the men's 400m hurdles at the 2011 Pan Am junior championships.

"I am excited to have someone of Raymond's pedigree joining our staff and continuing to build and develop what Colleen has already established over the past six years," said Inglis. "Raymond's technical knowledge will continue the development of our jumps program into one of the best in the country. For the past several years our horizontal jumpers have done very well at the OUA and CIS levels and we look for this tradition to continue."

Rudder has a bachelor's degree in physical education and sport from the International School of Physical Education and Sport in Cuba that he earned in 2006, and a master's degree in management science from the Indiana Institute of Technology earned in 2014. He is also an IAAF Academy Level 5-certified coach and completed an internship at the IAAF High Performance Regional Development Center in Havana in the horizontal jumps.

He is also an IAAF certified official and has diplomas in advanced sport management and sport administration from the International Olympic Committee and high performance track and field coaching from the Pan American Sport Organization.

"I think we can capitalize on some major points in both the multi-events and jumps groups, and my past experience working with athletes at a number of different levels gives me a broad perspective as to what needs to be done in this present role," said Rudder of his new position. "I am looking forward to seeing our athletes progress over the coming months."
