Auteur
Theory: Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining
By: Michelle Tirkalas
Stories
can be interpreted in a multitude of ways depending on the personal
standpoint of the individual. Interpretation begins with a kernal
of thought; an original idea, from which new ideas and forms of
thought branch off. A screenplay is a flat form of communication
with dialogue and stage direction, that has yet to come to life.
The final product, the film, ultimately emerges from the original
screenplay as a result of the interpretations it inspires. In this
way, Auteur Theory is essential in expressing interpretation from
print to film, in terms of the directors personal style. Aurteur
Theory describes how the style impregnates the film with the personality
of its director. More specifically, director Stanley Kubrick is
a great example of how one can use personal style to flavour the
interpretation of a story. There are both merits and demerits to
having a distinct style, and these will be explored in terms of
Kubrick's style in his films "The Shining" and "Eyes
Wide Shut".
