Through intersecting the perspectives of indigenous people and policies on environmental health, Qjiel champions a rights-based approach in achieving planetary wellness. The threat of chemicals and plastics pollution may potentially harm the identity of tribes that have shared beliefs of the river as a living entity.

He has traveled globally to document the plight of indigenous people and how they have brought their practices to safeguard the modern environment. Southeast Asia is one of the world’s biggest plastic polluters. The Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand are responsible for more than half of the world’s ocean plastic pollution. This would also mean affecting the way of life of many marginalized groups living near coasts or have an indigenous connection to water. Simply, harming the water will harm the generations to come where young people are welcomed to a world full of toxins caused by our generation.

These plastic particles further breakdown into microplastics are now inside our bloodstream which parallels back to why rivers are sacred because blood does the same to bring life all over the body. They can cross the blood-brain barrier, testicles, heart, lungs, and even the placenta. Qjiel has done lectures and TV appearances about microplastics globally to support knowledge translation of the plastics crises among different disciplines. He has appeared in the UNICEF Children’s Environmental Health Collaborative report on Generation Plastic where he shared about the indigenous connections of plastic pollution and health. He represented the stories of indigenous people, particularly those in the Philippines, in conversations like the the ITU Generation Connect Summit in Kigali, Science-Policy Panel on the Sound Management of Chemicals and Wastes in Bangkok, the INC-4 Global Plastics Treaty in Ottawa, the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice in Nairobi, the EU4GH Summer School in Salerno, and more.

At just 18, Sophia’s work has led to the bus being free for those under the age of 13 in Regina, providing 36,000 children equitable mobility.

She has also co-led Regina Energy Transition (RET) and contributed to the City of Regina’s Energy and Sustainability Framework, a bold plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Beyond her advocacy, Sophia has excelled academically, being offered $300,000 in scholarships and awards, including the National Youth Climate Activism Award, Saskatchewan Junior Citizen of the Year and YWCA Regina Young Woman of Distinction Award.

She consistently inspires others, whether through her TEDx talk, research into the fate of microplastics, or outreach in the environmental field.

Currently, Sophia is pursuing her Bachelor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta.
