- Tale of the Dogwood
A fascinating presentation (including high speed video) of the explosive release of pollen by a very common Canadian plant,
bunchberry (the scientific name acknowledges Canada: Cornus canadensis
[photo]). Ted Mosquin describes how he discovered bunchberry's "explosive pollination" in
the Botanical Electronic News
- Chlorofilms
A repository of youtube-style videos. Topics range from the highly technical to just plain fun.
My favorite for the latter is Photosynthesis Peepshow
which has an introductory sequence of MIT/Harvard grad interviews, the grads are very surprised to discover plant
biomass comes mostly from atmospheric carbon dioxide. The site has competitions for best plant biology videos,
if you are interested.
- Botanical Society of America
A rich source of information about various topics in botany, including
educational outreach, and even how to grow venus flytraps. The journal, American Journal
of Botany, includes source papers helpful for the aspiring plant biologist. You may find the journal-specific
search engine helpful.
- Botany One
The Annals
of Botany Company publishes a weblog that highlights
interesting and topical news about plants. Many authors contribute to
a wide diversity of topics that will fascinate plant lovers.
- C-Fern - A Plant For Teaching and Research
A teaching and research resource for use of Ceratopteris. Students may find the gallery of pictures of
gametophytes (Spores to Fertilization) helpful.

- Galleries of Algae
A collection of beautiful photographs by Jason K. Oyadomari with the assistance of Dr. Michael Gretz (at Michigan
Technological University). The photographs are of algae collected from northern temperate environs. Many can be
found in lakes in Ontario.
- AlgaeBase
An almost encyclopedic database of algae. The emphasis is on taxonomy, the number of species in the database is about 125,000!
- ALGAL-ED
A key to common algae (requires java) and galleries of common algae (with movies)
are provided in a very well
designed website. The internet accessible key emphasizes algae that students are likely to encounter in their Algae Lab. The
work (by Hannah Shayler and Peter Siver) has been published.
PhycoKey by
AL Baker et al.
at the University of New Hampshire provides an alternative image-based key to common algae.
- Cornell Mushroom Blog
A compendium of the strange, the funny, the deadly and the beautiful mushroom. Very enjoyable. An associated
website at Cornell's Department of Plant Pathology provides a gallery of time lapse movies
of the growth of fungi and other organisms.
- George Barron's Website on Fungi
A collection of images and diagrams of fungal lifestyles, with a macabre focus on the varied ways fungi kill
other organisms and dominate the world......
- Fungal Genetics Stock Center
A curated site documenting collections of fungi, focussed on the model organism Neurospora crassa.

An outreach site initiated by the American Society of Microbiology (ASM). It has soundbites (mp3-style) and videos
on the marvels of the microbial world.
