Example of sexist
usage in The Toronto Star
"WIFE
LOSES SENIOR'S BID FOR MONEY" is about a woman, Muna Yassin,
who married a man, George Banton, who was 60 years older than her.
He died and left some money to her, but his 5 children do not want
the money to go to the woman so they took her to court. They have
been fighting the case for over 5 years. The children believe the
woman was, "determined to gain control and ownership of his
money." In the article the journalist uses the words senior
and widower to
describe the man. The connotations of
these words make us believe he is the victim. The female is described
as a wife and ex-waitress. She is put directly in her role being
labeled by her role and job title. The word "waitress"
is used even though they could have used server or waitstaff. There
is also a lot of irrelevant information in this article. For example
the age of the woman is stated and she is described a "tenacious".
The article is mostly about how she forced him into signing the
will and wanted only to "get her hands on his money".
This is an example of PATHOS because
the reader is meant to feel sympathy for the older man, "the
widower" and his family. They are also to feel hatred for the
woman who apparently only wanted money. The article does not state
how long their marriage was and if the man was happy in his last
days of life. It concentrated on how "calculating" the
woman was. She is even described as a predator finding victims to
trick them into marriage. They are not alluding that she may have
forced the old man to change his will they are outright saying that
she is not a victim in any way.
