SEXISM IN NEWSPAPER WRITING

Articles The Toronto Star Ethos, Pathos, Logos References

This examination of sexism in newspaper writing will focus specifically on the popular newspaper, THE TORONTO STAR . Even though there is a lengthy excerpt in their STATEMENT OF GOAL about keeping the policies of individual and civil liberties of its long time publisher, JOSEPH ATKINSON I found many occurrences of the policies being broken. There is also a section about the usage of stereotyping the sexes in the code of ethics of the SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS . The use of generalization and sexist language of the female sex is seen on 4 different occurrences on the same day in THE TORONTO STAR. These articles also include different forms of RHETORIC used to persuade the reader. This sexist usage can be seen in a variety of categories, such as word choice, relevance of information and grammatical structure. The writing in The Toronto Star, even though it has high guidelines for ethical and non-sexist language, expresses these things in their articles.
