Example of sexist
usage in The Toronto Star
"MOTHER,
DAUGHTER FOUND DEAD IN HOME" is about a 42 year old woman
and her 6 year old daughter found dead in their home with the father
who was found unconscious. The woman’s grandparents did not hear
from their daughter when they usually did, so they called the police.
The police broke down the door and found the family. The title "MOTHER,
DAUGHTER FOUND DEAD IN HOME" is passive sentence. There
is no blame put on anybody and they are being described as their
roles as a mother and daughter. Her age and marital status identify
her. The article states it is an "apparent double murder and
suicide attempt." There is no blame put on the husband when
he is the most obvious suspect. In just reading the title and sub
heading, the reader would not blame the father at all. The whole
article focuses on how good the mother was to her daughter and how
neighbors believed they were "a really nice family." This
is an example of ETHOS because the
article keeps referring back to the neighbors to give the family
credibility and readers are persuaded by this because the neighbors
should’ve really known the family, but they obviously did not know
what was going on inside the house. They give no information on
what motives the man would have. The father is being described as
a victim. This makes the reader have sympathy for him, PATHOS,
even though he is the most likely murderer. There is irrelevant
information given about occupation and age. They describe what both
the woman and man did for a living. Again there is no blame being
put on a possible killer. Because it was a domestic case and the
wife knew her husband it is not being portrayed as a violent murder.
There were no details given on how they were killed. The article
just keeps talking about how, "they seemed like a very nice
family."
