Example of sexist usage in The Toronto Star

"MEN LOSE THEIR HEADS OVER DITZY DAMES" is about the new craze of women being ditzy and unpredictable and how that drives men crazy. It talks about women's craziness as, "just another alluring attribute like a good figure or a good brain." It talks about crazy ladies of the past and present. This articles is a complete generalization of both sexes. It states that the new craze for woman is to be "self- absorbed, unpredictable and dangerous." Just using the word dames in the title is putting women down as sexual objects. The article also says, "Today's crazy ladies are merely ditzy, at worst neurotic, and mostly enjoying life and making a success of it. They're as likely to be lawyers and strategic planners as artists and writers and patients." They are saying that these are not typical career choices for women and it is more common to see a woman as a writer or artist. The word lady is repeated throughout the article. They do not use woman, but crazy ladies in almost every sentence. This demeans women. They also have experts on the topic in the article. A Manhattan psychiatrist and clinical professor at New York University describes the idea of the crazy lady and then admits, "I have, in fact, been involved with several crazy ladies." These people are supposed to be experts and they are generalizing and putting women in their stereotypic roles of being indecisive sexual objects. Putting the experts in the article will make it more persuasive to the reader because ETHOS is being used. If a professional states that "ladies" are only sexual or crazy, they have credibility because they are professionals at what they do, so what they say must be true. It also says that, "Nobody finds capable, stable Hilary Clinton sexy and desirable, probably not even Bill." There are not only two types of women in the entire world: crazy and stable. It is irrelevant information that Bill Clinton cheated on his wife. This article is not newsworthy at all, though it gives the impression on the reader that it is a logical and reasonable article, LOGOS, it is written in such a way that all the thoughts are organized and look logical even though it is making the most ridiculous claims.
