Example of sexist
usage in The Toronto Star
"WOMAN
WHO SHOT HUSBAND 'SUFFERED'"is about an Oshawa woman, who
in 1995 shot her husband, wants support payments from him. She shot
him in the face, went to jail for 2 years and is now receiving social
assistance. Under Canada’s Divorce Act, a court cannot consider
the misconduct of a spouse when ruling on entitlement to support.
The woman is being made fun of. Because the word suffered is in
quotes the reader is to assume that she really did not suffer because
her husband was the person who got shot. Throughout the article
it gives specific details about what happened, "David, who
still has a bullet lodged in his spine, also had to have plastic
surgery to reconstruct his face." This uses ETHOS
to make the man the victim. The article compares how much money
he made before and after the shooting and how the woman wants to
take some of the little money he has. The make her look like she
is a greedy selfish person. They only make one reference that the
man cheated on her and that is why she shot him. They don’t even
use the word cheated they say "estranged husband" they
make it look ambiguous. They comment on how the woman "dabbed
her eyes with Kleenex" when her lawyer talked about both her
and her husband suffering. This article is using ETHOS
again to say that readers should not sympathize with her by saying
that she is not the victim in this case. It would be relevant information
if there were a history of abuse in their relationship because that
would further explain why she would shoot him. It would also make
logical sense, LOGOS to put more information
of their relationship in general for example how long was the man
cheating on her and how she found out. All of this information would
no longer make the man look like an innocent victim and therefore
was probably not included for that reason.
