Character Development - Frank Churchill and Christian

By Vicki Unsworth

Frank Churchill's name was mentioned early on in the novel; however his character did arrive until mid story. He was the son of Mr. Weston, the main married to Emma's ex-governess and best friend, Ms. Taylor. He was an attractive, rich, confident man who was said to be the male version Emma. Throughout the novel, Emma Woodhouse was convinced that he was in love with her, however; the reader soon realized that she could not have been more wrong, he was secretly engaged to a poor, beautiful orphan by the name of Jane Fairfax and his affections and the attention towards Emma were a cover to hide his engagement.

The character of Christian in Clueless was the modernized version of Frank Churchill. Christian arrived during the middle of the film and as a new student at Beverly Hills High. Cher instantly was drawn to Christian, he was cute, charismatic and she loved the challenge for his attention. What Cher did not know, was that Christian was gay. Like always, she assumed that because he was nice to her and they got along well, he was madly in love with her. Eventually Cher realized his sexual orientation and the two remained close friends.
