Brief Description

The “remittances” component of the project is designed to collect exploratory data on remittances sent from Canada to Latin America. Remittances are worth studying for several reasons. First, these financial flows reflect the importance of family and related social relations and obligations. Second, they are indicative of family dispersion. Third, they provide crucial income for families throughout Latin America. Fourth, remittances have become tremendously important at a macro-level to the balance of payments of a number of Latin American countries. Estimates of remittances to Latin America from the United States are available from sender surveys and Central Bank data. However, there is virtually no empirical data on remittances from Canada. Existing research has begun to address this through research on remittances to Jamaica and Haiti. However, we are not aware of information on remittances to the rest of the region.

Methodology

This component of the project will collect data among remittance senders in order to construct a profile of senders in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), along with estimates of the amount sent to selected countries. Resource constraints limit our ability to compare senders to non-senders, or determine how widespread sending behaviour might be.
