Serving the New Economy: Critical Perspectives on Hospitality and Tourism Work
A CRWS Workshop
October 13-14, 2006
Ramada Hotel and Suites Downtown, 300 Jarvis St., Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Growth sectors such as hospitality employ large numbers of women, migrants and people of colour, often in precarious situations. These workplaces are as much part of the ‘new’ economy as high-technology industries, but they do not promise the same benefits for marginalized workers.
This workshop brings together an international group of researchers from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds to share progressive research on tourism and hospitality work. The workshop will feature presentations on hospitality work from a critical perspective in four panels:
- Restructuring Hospitality and Tourism Work: Cross Sectoral Perspectives
- Marginalization and Hospitality Workers: Gender, Race, Class and Hospitality Nexus
- Hospitality Workers’ Capital
- Labour and the Regulation of Hospitality Work
