Using Subject DirectoriesIn addition to print and electronic encyclopedias and general reference works provided by York University Libraries, publicly accessible Subject Directories can be a good source for introductory information on many topics. Information found in Subject Directories is usually human-selected and they often provide links to portals or gateways that provide high-quality information. For example, look at this page of links [opens in a new window] to material on the history of Canada, provided by the directory Canadian Information by Subject. There are several Subject Directories that focus on scholarly materials freely available on the WWW. Some directories can be searched by keyword, but most are arranged into subject categories that can easily be browsed and navigated. A list of Subject Directories is available on the Search the Internet page on the York University Libraries' Web site. Ready to move on? Go to Evaluating Web Resources
