Presentation: Planning the Just City: Social Justice in Tower Renewal
Mr. Kilbourn's presentation discussed the results of his research on social justice and urban revitalization. He examined how the principal document produced by the Tower Renewal Office (Mayor's Tower Renewal Opportunities Book) articulates a desire for social justice and how that articulation of social justice may or may not be present in the implementation of the project. The theoretical root of Mr. Kilbourn's research borrows heavily from the work of Susan Fainstein and her ideas of the 'Just City'. This research explores how we understand social justice and the limits that may exist in creating a just city and uses Tower Renewal as a particularly relevant site for this exploration.
